What is Borderless Visit?
Beyond borders, at the same table.
In 2009, our founder Megumi visited Denmark and was invited to a local family’s home for dinner. Sharing a home-cooked meal with people she had just met created new bonds that left a lasting impression. This simple yet powerful experience showed how people can connect beyond culture and language, and it became the inspiration for what would later become Nagomi Visit.
In 2011, the program began in Japan. Travelers deeply interested in Japanese culture met local residents who had few opportunities to interact across cultures. These encounters did not end with a single visit. Many continued their friendships long after, creating meaningful relationships that have enriched everyday lives and perspectives.
As the community grew and the world changed, our vision expanded too.
In 2025, Nagomi Visit became Borderless Visit, continuing the same mission of bringing people together through shared meals and genuine encounters. Though the name has evolved, the spirit remains the same: connecting across borders, one table at a time.
We build friendships, not transactions.
Our program has always been designed to nurture genuine understanding between people, not business relationships.
In every encounter, guests and hosts meet as equals. There is no sense of “service provider” and “customer.” Instead, both sides connect like friends who share curiosity and respect for one another. This equality is at the heart of what we do, reflecting the spirit of what is known as Convivial Tourism—a way of travel that values mutual understanding and shared joy rather than transactions.
Our hosts do not participate as volunteers, nor as business operators. They welcome guests because they value genuine exchange. Each host receives half of the participation fee to cover the actual expenses involved in preparing and welcoming guests, including the cost of ingredients and other arrangements for the day. The remaining half supports the operational expenses needed to keep the program running smoothly.
This structure ensures that the experience remains fair and balanced for everyone involved — hosts, guests, and the Borderless Visit team. Together, we create an environment where meaningful encounters can grow naturally.
We intentionally avoid a review system, because friendships are not something to be rated. Instead, we focus on trust, communication, and the shared belief that authentic encounters can only happen when people feel safe and respected.
More than a tourist activity; it is a bridge between cultures.
Since 2011, more than 10,000 people from all over the world — families, couples, and solo travelers of all ages — have shared over 5,000 meals with local hosts across Japan.
For our guests, Japan is no longer just a travel destination; it is where their new friend lives.
Decades of research in social psychology — beginning with Gordon Allport’s contact hypothesis — show that meaningful contact between people of different backgrounds can lessen prejudice and encourage mutual trust. Through these small yet heartfelt exchanges around the dining table, we hope to contribute to a more open and connected world.
